The picturebook A Reunião na Rua das Aguarelas, em frente ao Pátio dos Artistas was developed through a collaboration between APEI and GAINKids under the Erasmus+ programme, exploring global citizenship and participation. The story and illustrations grew from a question posed to the children in Group 1 at Choupal Kindergarten, part of the Alexandre Herculano School Cluster in Santarém, Portugal: If you were the Mayor of Santarém, what would you do to make the children in your city very happy? The children helped Rosa Montez shape the story, and their drawings were incorporated into the illustrations.
Some illustrations reinterpret specific artworks: Joan Miró’s Women and Bird in the Moonlight (1944), Helena Almeida’s Study for an Inner Improvement (1977), Pablo Picasso’s Acrobat and Young Harlequin (1905), Salvador Dalí’s The Elephants (1948), and René Magritte’s The Treachery of Images (1928). Other references include the work of Gustav Klimt and Jackson Pollock, and the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego museum.
Materials and process: Adhesive tape, crayons, oil pastels, markers, sponge stamps, brushwork, linoleum printing ink, and collage. Digital composition in Photoshop and Procreate, with page layout in InDesign.
